I lived on Maui for 6 months. Can totally recommend Maui! Any Island is good really good surf, Maui has it all, beginners and really bad Jaws!. The locals are nice if you are nice to them and treat them with respect. Lot of under the table-work whereever you go, (construction, tourism, hotels etc) pretty easy finding a condo/house to share.. Go to Maui, and you can find a job, a car and a apartment, by checking out Craigs list (www.craigslist.com) Start off at The Banana Bungalow Hostel (very cheap) in Kahului (the capital) and go from there!
Good luck!! Aloha!
