Lisbon or Porto for learning to surf?« on: May 12 2014 10:05:00 »
My sister and I are going to go surfing for just under a week in August, we are beginners and are wondering where a good place would be to learn? We are going to fly to either Porto or Lisbon and stay in the nearby area. We won't have a car, so would want to be somewhere close to the city. Any suggestions?

Hi Eleanor, I love Porto but Lisbon is a better place for surf. You have the mellow beaches of Caparica just cross river Tagus, and the surf meccas Ericeira and Peniche a little further north. If you need a campervan we're glad to help you at portugalbyvan.com.

Hi Eleanor i think that Ericeira could be a better decision everyone knows around here that in August there's no wave in Lisbon. Ericeira it's a nice vilage with a lot of beach options and if you are staying at a surfcamp or hostel usualy they have transfer service from the aeroport.

Olá Eleanor, in my opinion Lisbon offer the best condition to surf and you have many spots that for sure will work good for you to learn. We Yellow Van Surf Rides teach how to surf around Lisbon town with transport all year around and we alway find a good place to teach around town. I dont agree there is no waves in Lisbon area in august, since this just depends on the swells and winds. In august we can have small or big waves, depending of nature decision. We have places to surf that are more exposed to bigger swells and others less exposed. So for sure you'll find always something. In the mean time if you need help, we are glad. Get in touch and we show you all the best of Lisbn.
Have fun and good waves ;)

I found the water around Lisbon and Porto to be too polluted for my tastes. My favorite place in Portugal and your best bet for summer waves is Peniche Right on the beach there´s a bunch of surf shacks, which can also hook you up with accomodation. I stayed at the Penichekitecenter (they have surfboards too!) and loved it!
