The best time to surf is when I'm not out!

Ive surfed here for 20 years. It totally depends on the place and the year, but the most reliable spots are pretty easy to pick. I agree with the other post, late summer through early winter North Island pumps both coasts. The beauty of this country is you can suss out a new weather system and rock up to where it is hitting best.
Winter in Raglan is a good base. Come late summer, get a car and mobile internet connection, check the surf websites, be prepared to move around and you will surf quality every single day. Water temps dive from 20+ to 17 or cooler so bring rubber for the cool down.
