Maldives on a Budget« on: April 22 2007 05:04:00 »
Is the Maldives on a budget possible? All I get are quotes from what appears to be way overpriced resorts ($1400+ US per week) - or are they all priced like this? Thinking of going there beginning of August for a week. Do I go north or south atolls for this time of year? Can anyone recommend a cheap resort where surfers get picked up by the boat daily for trips to the reefs? I would prefer to contact the resort myself than have to go through these surfing vacation operators. Any help appreciated.

not when you're flying from sri lanka - then its only 340. Too used to cheap indo trips, then to have to pay $1400 for nothing but a guy with boat for potentially crowded waves....

Can I turn up, stay in a guesthouse and pick up a daily boat from the marina?

On a budget doesn't work so well because of the need of a boat to get to the breaks(unless staying at one of the surf resorts - which are not budget). The currents are very strong and it is not possible to just paddle to a spot from the next island.

I run a small surf travel company called Liquid destination. My tours are $4000 (aus) for 10 nights on a boat down south. I don't know if $4000 is exactly considered budget but the Maldives areas down south aren't exactly budget destinations. If you want a chat about where to go or some advice flick me an email on [email protected]
(even if it's no my tours i might be able to help)

There is a budget surfing company that offers cheap rates, especially when you come with a group, USD 60 per day. Staying in a guesthouse and doing daytrips.
