Recommend losmen GH in Ebay Pitstop area in Mentawai?« on: September 12 2013 11:09:00 »
I'm going to Mentawai as independant surfer, and plan to catch a ferry from Padang to Muara Siberut, and boat to Ebay Pitstop Area, I speak a little of bahasa. I dont want to stay in a western expensive camp, I know there are some local losmen, and I defintively prefer this option..
-Do you have a losmen with friendly family to recommand?
-Any idea for the price accomodation with food per day?
-Any idea about the price of the boat SIberut/Ebay Area?
-Do we have to bring our food or not? (I know that was the case few years ago)
Thanks a lot for any info. U can sent it to me by private message should you prefer.

Second losmen from the far east end is run by a good guy Sabit, the one out the back behind his place is run by a good friendly family, that said i believe there all related in some way there all from Siberut (talieo) and your money will go back into the community rather than into some western investors pocket.
Two years back it was Rp 100,000 per person per day without food, more if you want them to cook for you, but a year before that it was only Rp 70,000 so who knows now?
I wouldn't be surprised if more, they see the western greed around so its a bit like monkey see monkey do.

I think you will need to still take majority of food but you can buy some noodles, biscuits and even cold beer last time i was there, you can also order food from the closest village on Siberut mainland (Pei pei).
But that said shop in Siberut and take as much food and water as you can.
Sorry I cant remember the price on boat there, but i do remember it was expensive compared to other places in Indonesia and expensive getting to waves by boat.

PS. No need for private message, its not a secret.
1. if you have a look in Indonesia lonely planet most of what ive said is written there and on there lonely planet forum.
2. There is about ten resorts/surf camps built and funded by westerners many with investors there all about making money, who deserves your money more a western investor or a true local with little other opportunity.
3. Again there is many many charter boats, any problem with crowds is due to resorts and charter boats, who have exploited the area for years while giving SFA back to the people.

Meant to say Indonesia lonely planet guide book.
And the 10 resorts i mention are in playgrounds area (more being built) but there is about 15 in total in mentawais.
BTW Resorts, some surf charters are the ones who have named locations of waves even GPS marks in Kanduis case and given info such as conditions breaks work in, tides winds, swell.

So to anyone who disses me giving this info away, you can go and get F#@ked, because if the Mentawais are ruined or crowded its because of 15 resorts and 30 to 50 charter boats all fuelled by the surf magazines they advertise in, not a dozen true local families who have more right than anyone to make money and a better life in there own backyard.
Also every few years or so crazy schemes come up to control the Mentawais, basically so resorts can monopolise the market, the best way to combat any future schemes is for the locals to be successful in having a place in Mentawai tourism market and if the mentawai government or resorts are to get through any future scheme it will be at the expense of charter boats hopefully restricting and cutting numbers and an eventual phase out

I will never pay for that. And will always go to a local family homestay. I think this is a matter of time, villagers will do more and more local homestays, at reasonnable price. And people will not anymore go on charter ferryes paying 250$ a day, to srf a crowded waves where on landtravellers pays the tenth of their prices. Then, ferries operation will stop, and buisness will come back in the hands of the villlagers..:) I know i am dreaming, as many of the guys with lots of $$ wants the dream pictures, avoid the haslles of traveling by themselves (even if i really love that, maybe more than surfing:), and go fast for their 10 days vacations...
I dont really want to go so far to surf in overcrowded area, do yout think October will still be crowded?

Those prices on that website are closeish to normal prices but a little bit higher, although there is also no such thing as a mentawai permit, but by law anywhere in Indonesia your home stay or hotel/resort must register your passport details with the local police, that is not your responsibility but the person you stay with.
There is no need to go through a website like that and Rp 300, 000 sounds expensive.
Althought there is many camps/resorts and boats crowds are still hit and miss, i would just go, the Mentawais is a place every surfer should go once.
Telos and Banyaks are a lot harder to get too or get around, very hard unless you can speak Bahasa Indonesian.
