my brother and me are planning a trip up nsw coast into qld. taking 2 - 4 months. both of us grew up 5hrs from the ocean. we have never surfed before but can wakeboard and snowboard very well. how is the best way to go about learning to surf?? buy our own boards? do learn to surf classes?? which beaches/towns are best to stop at?? any ideas suggestions would be awesome!!

Seeing you plan to do your trip with so much time I feel I would have really liked to have started from the area just north of the Victorian border. It's supposed to be so much more beautiful south of Sydney. The surf is also supposed to be really something else also. I reckon it's best to learn yourself and read a few books on surfing.
Taj Burrow has produced a really class book i've just been reading but it's good to feel in others peoples ideas and create your own.
