Safety: All political gatherings, protests and demonstrations should be avoided. Thieves are the biggest problem in Peru, with one of the worst reputations in South America. Be especially cautious in crowded areas, on public transport, bus and train stations, and in the centre of Lima at night. Special care is required in the cities of Lima and Cuzco against street and violent crime; three foreign tourists were raped in June 2005. Authorities are planning to increase security on the Inca Trail after an organised tour group were attacked and robbed on 15 November 2005 by a group of armed men. There have been recent attacks on foreigners trekking in the Huayhuash region near Huaraz and trekkers should be cautious in the area and seek advice before setting out. Thieves and muggers also operate in Huaraz and Arequipa.
Communications: The country code for Peru is +51, and the outgoing code is 00. City codes must also be dialled (Lima 1). A mobile phone operator provides a GSM 1900 network with coverage limited to major towns and cities. Peru is well connected to the Internet with a proliferation of inexpensive Internet kiosks, called cabinas pública, available on street corners in most towns and cities.
Climate : Peru has a temperate climate along the coast which is influenced by a cold ocean current called the Humboldt. There is a rainy season from June to October and conditions are cooler in the Andes with the rainy season from October to April while the Selva has a tropical climate with humid and hot conditions from October to March. Average annual precipitation varies from 2,540 mm (100 inches) to 3,960 mm (156 inches) depending on the region. Average temperature ranges in Lima are from 13 to 19 degrees Celsius (55 to 66 degrees Fahrenheit) in August to 19 to 28 degrees Celsius (66 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit) in February.
